I’ve taken pictures for much longer than I want to admit, and realized in 2007 that my passion of photography was taking over my life. I had more passion than I had skill, quickly realizing that I was producing snapshots over photographs.

It took almost a year for me to arrive at the decision to attend Western Academy of Photography in Victoria BC to learn the craft of photography.

In the end, the fear of giving up financial security and my position as Manager of Finance for a large non-profit organization in Vancouver was outweighed by the fear of being in a seniors home wishing I had taken the chance. Perhaps this is my mid-life crises, perhaps this is the beginning of the rest of my life. The only thing I’m sure of is that I am not going to be wondering “what if I had taken that year off to study?”

I am surrounded by endless creative talent at Western Academy; stimulating me to think more and be more creative. I’m grateful to be part of this 2008-2009 group of students and anticipate watching as their careers unfold. Without question we have many future award winners among us.

For myself, I hope to eventually be a master photographer in the genres of travel, event, family, stock, and portrait photography.

UPDATE: On June 18th, 2009, I walked up to the front of the conference room and accepted my Diploma in Professional Photography. It was a good day.
